'No Data-No Progress'. Five years into the Decade of Roma Inclusion - high time for governments to get serious about data collection

In June 2010 the Roma Information Office of the Open Society Institute published a new report confirming the long-held assertion that the lack of disaggregated data is a major barrier to progress and weakens the impact of policies to promote equality and nondiscrimination.

Julia Szalai presented EDUMIGROM at a media briefing on 'Social Inclusion by Education in Europe's Multicultural Society,' organised by the Directorate-General for Research of the European Commission.

'Segregation and Schooling': the EDUMIGROM research group is organizing a roundtable discussion at Babes-Bolyai University on May 27, 2010, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.

The roundtable discussion will include a public lecture by Dr. Vera Messing (Center for Policy Studies, Central European University, Hungary), on how school segregation shapes students' performance, self-esteem and future aspirations. Dr. Bolette Moldenhawer (University of Copenhagen, Denmark) and Dr. Eniko Vincze (Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj, Romania) will act as discussants.

Systemic segregation of Romani children in school continues

The European Court of Human Rights has reaffirmed that school segregation of Romani children constitutes illegal discrimination, still prevalent in Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Northern Ireland (UK), Portugal and Spain.

"The misplacement of Roma in special education remains one of the main barriers to access to quality education for Roma in many of the Roma Decade countries"

In its February 2010 newsletter, the European Network Against Racism published an article by Mihai Surdu of the Roma Education Fund addressing issues faced by Roma in the field of education and the ways forward in terms of tackling these issues, including desegregation policies.
